Jurat: A notarial act that certifies that the signer personally appeared before the notary public on the date and in the venue indicated in the certificate, promised through an administration of an oath or an affirmation.

Swear: When taking an oath, a signer may swear under the power of a higher being. (ex: "So help you God).

Affirm:  When taking an oath, a signer may affirm that they confirm that the information contained in the document is true to the best of their belief, with no reference to a higher being.

  • Chapter 197, Statutes of 2014 amends CA Government Code section 8202 to require the addition of the following specifics disclaimer to the top of the form jurat: 

    • A Notary Public or other officer completing this certificate verifies only the identity of the individual who signed the document to which this certificate is attached, and not the truthfulness, accuracy, or validity of the document."​
